What the studies found
A 2016 study in New Zealand followed 41 adults with type 2 diabetes. Walking 10 minutes after each main meal gave 12% lower blood sugar after meals than one 30-minute walk a day. After the evening meal, it was 22% lower.
A 2022 review of seven studies found that light walking breaks lowered blood sugar and insulin after eating compared with sitting. Standing helped a little; walking helped more.
How soon after eating should I walk?
A 2023 review of eight small studies found that exercise after a meal lowered the rise in blood sugar, while exercise before a meal did not. The authors suggest moving as soon as possible after eating, at a pace that feels comfortable.
What it does not do
These were short studies of blood sugar after meals, mostly in people without diabetes. They don’t show that walking after eating prevents or reverses diabetes, and it never replaces medicine your doctor prescribed.
Make it part of your round
After-meal walks count toward your steps in a Walk & Water round. Three 10-minute walks a day is a steady way to reach your goal on a team of two to four. Your first two 3-day rounds are free.
