A walking pad plan you’ll actually use

Short answer

A walking pad helps with weight loss by adding easy walking to days you would otherwise sit through. It is not magic: the gain comes from using it most days, in short blocks, at a pace you can talk at. Pair it with your calorie number and use the planner below to build your desk day.

The short version

  • Short blocks at a talking pace
  • Indoor steps count the same in a round
  • Food still sets the direction

Build your desk-day plan

Pick how many walking blocks fit your work day and how long each one lasts.

Are walking pads good for weight loss?

They can be, because they turn sitting time into easy walking time. Women who get results with one usually use it most work days, not once in a burst of motivation.

The honest part: a walking pad will not out-walk your plate. It adds movement, and your calorie number sets the direction.

How long should I walk on a walking pad?

Start with what fits: two or three blocks of 10 to 15 minutes. Hold that for a week. Then add one block or five minutes per block. Many women end up at 45 to 90 minutes spread across a work day.

At an easy desk pace, expect roughly 70 to 100 steps a minute. The planner above turns your blocks into a step estimate.

Make it a habit, not a purchase

Bad weather, school runs and back-to-back calls are exactly when a walking pad earns its spot. Bring it into a 3-Day Walk & Water round and your indoor days count on the live board, with a team that notices when you show up.

The 3-Day Walk & Water Challenge

How a round works

  1. 1. Join a team

Two to four of you on one team: a friend’s, your own, or one you join in the app. Your team gets a name, a crest & a spot on the live leaderboard.

  2. 2. Walk + water, 3 days

Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday. A step goal & a water goal sized to where you are today. The board updates as you walk & closes Thursday at midnight, Arizona time.

  3. 3. Friday winners

Friday morning the results go up. The winning team’s card glows gold, badges land beside names on the board, and a new round starts Tuesday.

Bigger isn’t better. Teams rank on their AVERAGE.

A team’s score is its average per woman, not its total. So two friends can beat a team of four, and every walker’s day counts the same. When one of you goes quiet, the others notice & send a nudge in team chat.

The Walk & Water team card: team name and crest, team level, the average steps per woman, and each teammate’s steps and glasses of water.
Your team card. The big number is the average per woman.
The Walk & Water leaderboard: your rank this week, steps, glasses of water, day streak, and the 3-day challenge rankings.

Three desk days to start

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. Same blocks, same pace.

  1. Walk the calls, not the typing

Phone & video calls are easy walking blocks. Slow down or step off for focused typing.

  2. Short blocks

Two or three 10–15 minute blocks beat one long session you keep postponing.

  3. Log the finish

Your steps count in the round like any walk outside. Your team sees the day.

Questions

How many calories does a walking pad burn?

It depends on your weight, pace and minutes. At 2.5 mph, the 2024 Compendium rates level walking at 3.0 METs, which works out to roughly 135 to 180 calories an hour above resting for a woman weighing 150 to 200 pounds. Treat it as an estimate, not a meter reading.

Can I type while walking?

Some women can at a slow pace. If your typing or posture suffers, walk during calls & reading, and stand or sit for focused work.

Do walking pad steps count in the challenge?

Yes. Steps from your phone or watch count the same, indoors or out.

Which walking pad should I buy?

We don’t recommend brands. Look for a speed range that starts slow, a weight limit above yours & a quiet motor.

I’m Josh. I built Get Your BMR so you could see what your body burns at rest, & I built Walk & Water so you’d have somewhere to use it with people who notice when you show up.

I walk every round too: same board, same three days, on my own team. I don’t always win. Tap Chat with Coach in the app & it’s me who answers.
