Most women do well starting with 20 to 30 minutes of walking on most days, then adding time once the routine sticks. Walking alone rarely covers a full daily calorie gap, so pair it with your calorie number. Use the calculator below to see what your walks burn in a week.
See the extra calories your walks burn in a week, and how much of a steady daily gap they cover.
How many steps a day to lose weight?
There is no single magic number. For health, a large study of daily steps found benefits leveled off at about 8,000 to 10,000 steps for adults under 60, and about 6,000 to 8,000 for adults 60 and over.
For weight, steps are only half the story. The other half is the gap between your calorie number and what you eat.
What your walks can and can’t cover
A common way to frame weight loss is a daily gap of about 500 calories below maintenance. The calculator compares your walks with that hypothetical gap: a moderate 30-minute walk covers roughly a fifth to a quarter of it for many women.
Two notes. The Get Your BMR quiz assumes a lightly active week, so only walks beyond your usual routine are extra. And the target never goes below 1,200 calories a day, so for smaller women the real gap can be much less than 500.
Does pace matter?
A little. Brisk walking burns more per minute than easy walking, and about 100 steps a minute is a common sign you have reached a moderate pace. But a walk you repeat beats a fast walk you dread. Pick the pace you can come back to tomorrow.

Two to four of you on one team: a friend’s, your own, or one you join in the app. Your team gets a name, a crest & a spot on the live leaderboard.
2. Walk + water, 3 days
Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday. A step goal & a water goal sized to where you are today. The board updates as you walk & closes Thursday at midnight, Arizona time.
3. Friday winners
Friday morning the results go up. The winning team’s card glows gold, badges land beside names on the board, and a new round starts Tuesday.
Bigger isn’t better. Teams rank on their AVERAGE.
A team’s score is its average per woman, not its total. So two friends can beat a team of four, and every walker’s day counts the same. When one of you goes quiet, the others notice & send a nudge in team chat.

A walking ladder that sticks
Climb one rung a week. Stay on a rung as long as you need.
1
Start where you are
Walk the minutes that feel easy today on five days this week. That is your first rung.
2
Add 5 minutes
Next week, add five minutes to each walk, or add one more walking day.
3
Hold at 30–45
Most women land between 30 & 45 minutes on most days. More is fine if it fits your life.
Questions
Is it better to walk once or split it up?
Either works. Two 15-minute walks count as much as one 30-minute walk, and splitting can be easier on busy days.
How accurate is the calorie estimate?
It is an estimate from 2024 Compendium MET values, counting only calories above resting. Terrain, fitness & devices change real burn.
How many steps is 30 minutes of walking?
About 100 steps a minute is typical of a moderate pace, so roughly 3,000 steps. Your stride & speed change it.

I’m Josh. I built Get Your BMR so you could see what your body burns at rest, & I built Walk & Water so you’d have somewhere to use it with people who notice when you show up.
I walk every round too: same board, same three days, on my own team. I don’t always win. Tap Chat with Coach in the app & it’s me who answers.
