What the guidance recommends
A 2024 position statement from Exercise & Sports Science Australia, building on the 2023 international PCOS guideline, recommends 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity a week (or 75 to 150 vigorous), plus muscle strengthening on two non-consecutive days.
For extra benefits, including modest weight loss, it suggests at least 250 minutes of moderate activity a week. Walking counts toward all of it.
Why walk after meals?
In short-term studies, breaking up sitting with light walking lowered after-meal blood sugar and insulin compared with sitting or standing. Those studies measured the hours after a meal, not long-term results, so treat it as a sensible habit rather than a treatment.
The practical win is simple: meals happen every day, so they are a built-in reminder.
When walking doesn’t seem to move the scale
Plenty of women with PCOS walk faithfully and see little change on the scale. Walking still counts toward your activity, and the scale also depends on your calorie number, protein and your care team’s plan. The guide on walking without losing weight walks through it.
