What makes a good team name
The names that last are the ones nobody has to explain. A few rules of thumb:
- Short: under 40 characters, which is also the limit in the app.
- Easy to say out loud, so it works in a group chat and at the office.
- Kind: no jokes about anyone’s body, weight or speed.
- Inclusive: avoid inside jokes that leave a new teammate out.
Names for workplace step challenges
At work, pick a name you would be comfortable seeing on a shared screen in a meeting. Office puns like “Out of Office” or “The Lunch Breakers” land well because everyone gets them.
Running a challenge for a whole office? See the workplace walking challenge guide for how to set up several teams.
Why walk on a team at all
A team turns a walk into a plan someone else is counting on. A 2013 review of 19 studies found that programs built around walking in groups increased how active people were, with a medium-sized effect.
Using your name in the Walk & Water app
In the app, a team is two to four people with a name, a crest and a spot on the live leaderboard. Teams rank on their average per person, so a team of two can beat a team of four and every walker’s day counts the same.
Team names are unique on the board. If someone already has yours, the app suggests another one you can use.
