A 28-day walking plan you can actually finish

Short answer

This free printable calendar splits 28 days into four short rounds. Your first two rounds in the Walk & Water app are free. Each week you walk with a small team for three days, add easy walks on the other days, and raise your step goal only when the last one felt doable. Print the calendar below.

The short version

  • Four 3-day rounds instead of 28 days of willpower
  • Raise the goal only after a week that felt doable
  • Indoor walks and short walks still count

How the four rounds work

Instead of asking for 28 days in a row, this plan gives you a finish line every week and a fresh start every Tuesday, so one missed day never ends the challenge.

Small, steady increases are normal. A review of step studies found that walking programs typically raise daily steps by about 2,000 to 2,500 a day, not 10,000 overnight.

What each week looks like

Every week follows the same pattern, so you never have to plan from scratch:

  • Monday: an easy walk to get ready.
  • Tuesday to Thursday: the round. You and your team chase a daily step goal and a daily water goal.
  • Friday: results go up and the winning team is announced. Take an easy walk.
  • Saturday: a longer walk if you feel like it, outside or in.
  • Sunday: rest or a gentle stroll.

How to raise your step goal

Coach Josh’s rule of thumb is about 10% more than your recent average, or at least 500 steps, held for a week before adding more. It is a coaching habit, not a medical rule.

For health, the CDC’s baseline is 150 minutes of moderate activity a week plus muscle strengthening on two days. Brisk walking counts as moderate when you can talk but not sing.

Will a 28-day walking challenge help me lose weight?

Walking adds to what you burn. Whether the scale moves depends on the gap between your daily calorie number and what you eat, so pair the walks with knowing that number. Results vary.

Walk it with a team this week

Join a team of 2–4, walk & drink your water Tuesday to Thursday, and see the winners Friday.

The 3-Day Walk & Water Challenge

How a round works

  1. 1. Join a team

Two to four of you on one team: a friend’s, your own, or one you join in the app. Your team gets a name, a crest & a spot on the live leaderboard.

  2. 2. Walk + water, 3 days

Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday. A step goal & a water goal sized to where you are today. The board updates as you walk & closes Thursday at midnight, Arizona time.

  3. 3. Friday winners

Friday morning the results go up. The winning team’s card glows gold, badges land beside names on the board, and a new round starts Tuesday.

Bigger isn’t better. Teams rank on their AVERAGE.

A team’s score is its average per woman, not its total. So two friends can beat a team of four, and every walker’s day counts the same. When one of you goes quiet, the others notice & send a nudge in team chat.

The Walk & Water team card: team name and crest, team level, the average steps per woman, and each teammate’s steps and glasses of water.
Your team card. The big number is the average per woman.
The Walk & Water leaderboard: your rank this week, steps, glasses of water, day streak, and the 3-day challenge rankings.
The live leaderboard. Solo, team & global ranks for this round.

Your four weeks

Same shape every week, so there is nothing new to remember.

  1. Week 1: start where you are

Your step goal is your current daily average. The point of week one is showing up, not a big number.

  2. Weeks 2 and 3: a little more

Add about 500 steps a day each week, but only if the week before felt doable. If it didn’t, repeat it.

  3. Week 4: hold and finish

Keep week three’s goal and finish all four rounds. Then decide what the next four weeks look like.

Questions

Is this 28-day walking challenge free?

Yes. The calendar is free to print, and your first two 3-day rounds in the Walk & Water app are free.

Do I need to walk 10,000 steps a day?

No. Start from your own daily average and add a little each week. A 2022 analysis found that the link between more daily steps and lower risk of death leveled off around 8,000 to 10,000 for adults under 60 and 6,000 to 8,000 for adults 60 and over. These are observational associations, not a prescription.

What if I miss a day?

Pick it back up the next day. Every week starts fresh on Tuesday, so one missed day never ends the challenge.

Can I do it with friends?

Yes. Rounds are walked on teams of two to four, and friends on iPhone and Android can be on the same team.

Can I do it indoors?

Yes. Hallway laps, walking in place and a walking pad all count, as long as your phone or watch is with you to count the steps.
