Walking for perimenopause and menopause weight

Short answer

Walking helps in perimenopause, and it works best as one piece of a plan. The Menopause Society recommends 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity a week plus strength training twice a week for midlife weight. Add protein, find your calorie number, and on exhausted days, walk shorter instead of skipping.

What changes in midlife

You are not imagining it. Women gain about 1.5 pounds a year on average during midlife, according to material presented at The Menopause Society’s 2025 meeting. Where fat sits on the body can shift, and lean muscle tends to decline.

An average is not a sentence. But it explains why the plan that worked at 32 can stall at 47, even when you are doing everything right.

Does walking help perimenopause weight gain?

Walking is one of the easiest ways to reach the activity the Menopause Society recommends: 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity a week, combined with strength training twice a week.

Walking alone rarely moves the scale on its own, at any age. It works best alongside your calorie number and enough protein to protect muscle.

When you are exhausted and can’t find the motivation

So many women describe the same thing: getting off the couch feels impossible some days. Waiting for motivation doesn’t work then. A smaller promise does.

That’s why a 3-day round helps. Three days is short enough to start this week, and a team of two to four notices when you go quiet. Your team ranks on its average, so your ten-minute day still counts.

The 3-Day Walk & Water Challenge

How a round works

  1. 1. Join a team

Two to four of you on one team: a friend’s, your own, or one you join in the app. Your team gets a name, a crest & a spot on the live leaderboard.

  2. 2. Walk + water, 3 days

Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday. A step goal & a water goal sized to where you are today. The board updates as you walk & closes Thursday at midnight, Arizona time.

  3. 3. Friday winners

Friday morning the results go up. The winning team’s card glows gold, badges land beside names on the board, and a new round starts Tuesday.

Bigger isn’t better. Teams rank on their AVERAGE.

A team’s score is its average per woman, not its total. So two friends can beat a team of four, and every walker’s day counts the same. When one of you goes quiet, the others notice & send a nudge in team chat.

A plan for the tired weeks

Built for energy that changes day to day.

  1. Pick your best window

Walk when energy is least likely to crash: often morning or right after lunch.

  2. Have a “floor” walk

Five to ten minutes is your floor on bad days. It still counts.

  3. Add strength twice a week

Simple moves at home are enough to start: sit-to-stands, wall push-ups, carrying.

Questions

How many steps a day after menopause?

Start from your current average & build. Large studies link more steps to better health, leveling off around 6,000–8,000 a day for adults 60 & over.

Is walking better than other exercise in menopause?

Walking is a strong base because you can repeat it. Adding strength work twice a week gives you more than walking alone.

Does walking help hot flashes?

This page makes no claim about symptoms. Talk to your doctor about hot flashes & treatment options.
